10 Montenegrin Commandments

Every person who has ever visited Montenegro notes the friendliness, hospitality and cordiality of the local population, which gladly receives guests. Life here flows slowly and measuredly, and the Montenegrins themselves are in no hurry to make serious and important decisions. They never rush anywhere, preferring to think ten times before doing anything. This approach to life can irritate many visitors, but the locals consider it the only true one. And the funny 10 Commandments that were invented by Montenegrins serve as proof of this.

Of course, these 10 Commandments are a joke, but as you know, there is some truth in every joke. The main message of these commandments is that any person should take it easy, enjoy life and not work hard, sacrificing their health.

To date, 10 Montenegrin Commandments can be found on a variety of souvenirs like T-shirts, dishes, postcards, posters and other small souvenirs.

10 Montenegrin Commandments

1) Man is born tired and lives to rest;

2) Love your bed as yourself;

3) Rest during the day so that you can sleep at night;

4) Don’t work – work kills;

5) If you see that someone is resting – help him;

6) Work as little as possible, and what you can – hand over to another;

7) A cool spot gives salvation, no one has yet died from resting;

8) All diseases come from work, do not die young;

9) If you want to work, sit down, rest, and this desire will pass;

10) If you see that someone is feasting – join; if you see that someone is working – go away and do not interfere!

Montenegrins are calm and unhurried people who solve all important issues over a cup of aromatic coffee or a glass of delicious wine. Such slowness immediately catches the eye of visitors. Because of this, many tourists mistakenly believe that the locals are unable to work hard. But this is absolutely not true. Montenegrins can and know how to work, but they also know that every person should be happy, and for this you need to find time to rest. In addition, a sense of self-irony such as the example of these commandments gives credit to Montenegrins.
